Gevgelija- the city of Sun
The city of sun is located in the south-eastern part of Macedonia, on the right bank of the Vardar River very close to the border with the Hellenic Republic. With a Mediterranean type climate Gevgelija is the warmest city in Macedonia. Between the city and the Vardar River is the “Vardar Hill” one of the area’s most interesting archeological sites.
The Legend
The warm spirit of the citizens of Gevgelija has engraved the legend into their "national memory" about a Dervish, Turkish army officer, who came to Gevgelija and did not want to leave. The citizens did not want to welcome this Dervish and decided to drive him out of town. The Dervish began to threaten the citizens in anger stating “I will come back with an army”. The citizens fearing the threat asked him not to leave with the words "gel-geri" meaning "come back” in the Turkish language.
Although this is a legend, the citizens of Gevgelija do not want to break the oath of their ancestors. Those who decide to stay in town and those who are ready for new challenges and experiences will always be welcomed.
